His To KeepRomans 8:16

The Witness That Is Not Her Own

This message is for a worship leader who is privately certain that everything visible in her is performance, and who has no way of telling the difference from the inside

The moment she cannot get past happened in a rehearsal, which is somehow worse than if it had happened on a Sunday.

Eleven people in the room and a bad monitor mix and a song they have done forty times. And on the last chorus her hand went up. Nobody was watching. There was no congregation, no camera, no reason for it, and her hand went up anyway, and she thought, very clearly, in the middle of it: I do not know if I meant that.

Not because it felt false. Because she could not tell.

That is the problem and it has been running for about two years. She has been leading since she was nineteen. She knows how to do this: she knows what to do with her face on the second verse, she knows when to stop singing and let the room carry it, she knows exactly how long to leave a silence before the last chorus so that it lands. All of that is craft and she is not ashamed of any of it.

But she cannot separate the craft from the thing underneath it, and after a while the question turns around and becomes: is there a thing underneath it.

She has tried testing herself. Singing alone in the car with nobody there, to see if it feels the same. It does, more or less, and she does not know how to read that either.

There is nobody she can ask, because the question sounds like false modesty coming from somebody in her position, and because the people who would answer it would answer it about her ability rather than about the thing she is actually asking.

Sit down in the empty rehearsal room. There is a verse for this and it moves the instrument.

Somebody else does the testifying

Here is the sentence, and the whole weight of it is in who is doing the speaking.

The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.Romans 8:16

The witness is not yours. Read it again and watch where the testimony originates: the Spirit Himself bears witness. Your spirit is the one being spoken to, not the one giving evidence.

That matters enormously for a person in your position, because you have been trying to run the verification internally, using instruments that are also the ones under suspicion. That is the problem you cannot solve from inside, and this verse does not solve it, it relocates it.

You are not the one who has to certify this. Romans 8:16 gives that job to the Spirit Himself, and the Spirit is the one bearing witness rather than waiting for you to produce a reading you can trust.

And notice what the verse assumes. It assumes there is a witness happening, continuously, whether or not the person is currently able to detect it. It is not describing an experience that arrives when you are doing well. It is describing something the Spirit does.

The craft is not the enemy

Now the specific tangle, because there is a false idea sitting inside it.

Skill has been getting treated as contamination. As though the fact that you know what to do with your face on the second verse makes everything else suspect, and that a purer version of you would be clumsy.

That is not how any other skilled work is judged. A surgeon who has done a thousand operations does not lose her care for the patient by having the movements in her hands. A father who has read the same book to a child four hundred times does not love the child less on the four hundred and first because he knows where the funny voice goes.

Practice does not hollow things out. It frees the top of your mind to be present while the hands do what they know.

You are not disqualified by competence. Nothing written anywhere makes clumsiness the evidence of sincerity, and the Spirit who distributes gifts to a church gave somebody the skill of leading a room, which He would be unlikely to do if the skill itself were the corruption.

What the car test could not tell you

Here is the last part, and it is the one that will actually let you put this down.

The test in the car failed for a structural reason rather than a spiritual one. You were using the same instrument to measure the instrument. Of course it read the same. It was always going to, and nothing written anywhere asked you to try, and the Spirit does not certify Himself through a woman auditing her own chest in a parked car.

Every test of that kind fails, which is why people in your position can run them for years and get nowhere. The only thing that could settle it is testimony from outside you, and Romans 8:16 says that is exactly what is on offer and exactly who is providing it.

Which leaves you with a different action than the one you have been taking. Not another test. A statement: saying out loud what Christ has done rather than assessing what you felt on the last chorus.

You have a standing that does not require your detection. It stands written as the Spirit's testimony rather than your own, and He does not withhold it from a woman who cannot currently read her own gauges.

And when your hand goes up in a rehearsal with nobody watching, that is not evidence you need to interpret. Let it be a thing that happened.

And it is worth saying what the two years have actually been. Not a slow discovery that there was nothing underneath. A slow discovery that the question cannot be answered by the method you were using, which is a different finding entirely and a much better one. A person who genuinely had nothing underneath does not spend two years quietly distressed about whether they do. That distress is not evidence against you. It is somebody who cares a great deal about the difference between the real thing and the performance, which is not the profile of a woman who has stopped meaning it. Romans 8:16 was never waiting on that distress to resolve, and the Spirit has been testifying straight through it.

The breakthrough

Here is where this leaves you, and it is not a verdict on the last chorus. It is a different witness stand.

Right now, as you read this, you are a woman who cannot read her own instruments and a woman about whom the Spirit Himself is testifying, and both are true at once. Romans 8:16 puts the witness in Him rather than in you, and He is bearing it whether or not you are able to detect it in a room with a bad monitor mix.

Nothing is being asked of you this week. Not certainty about the rehearsal, not a purer version of your craft, not another experiment in a car.

You are not required to certify yourself. Nothing written anywhere hands that job to a person about their own heart, and the Holy Spirit has been bearing witness for the whole two years you have been unable to hear Him doing it.

If the weight of this becomes dangerous, and staying safe is genuinely in question for you, please call emergency services or a crisis line where you live, and get another person physically near you. Reaching for help is not a failure of faith. It is one honest way of refusing to be alone with a night.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and is not something your own instruments were built to verify. Say these out loud with the lights half off. Scripture is what puts them in your mouth and the Spirit is the one who carries them, and the timing of everything else belongs to Him and is His to decide.

  1. Instrument I have been reading myself with, you are not the one that testifies. I cannot tell performance from worship from inside my own chest, and I do not have to. Romans 8:16 says the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit, and the witness was never mine to produce.
  2. Suspicion that skill has hollowed the whole thing out, you are answered in the name of Jesus. Nothing written anywhere makes clumsiness the evidence of sincerity, and the Spirit is the one who gave a church somebody who could lead a room.
  3. Lord, Your Spirit bears witness with my spirit that I am Your child, as Romans 8:16 says. I say what You have done tonight instead of grading what I felt, and I stop testing.
