The in-ear goes in and the count comes and she opens her mouth and the right notes come out.
That is the horrifying part. Everything works. The pitch is fine, the smile arrives on cue in the second verse, and when she lifts her hand on the last chorus four hundred people lift theirs, and she is standing up there thinking about the smell of the hospital corridor and the exact weight of her father's watch in her coat pocket, which she has carried every day for eleven days and has not told anybody about.
Eleven days. She counted them in the car.
Nobody asked her to be there. That is the thing she keeps saying to herself. The team lead had said take as long as you need, and she had said she would rather be busy, and she had meant it at the time, and then Sunday came and the lights came up and every single lyric in the set was about hope.
She sang the word forever. She sang the line about not being afraid. She sang a whole chorus about the God who is close, and the closest thing in the room was the watch in her pocket.
Afterward a woman she barely knows squeezed her arm in the corridor and said, you carried us today. And she went and sat in her car in the lot with the engine off and thought: if I carried anybody today, God, You know what I was carrying it with.
And underneath that, the accusation she has not said out loud to one human being. That the numbness means she never really believed any of it. That eleven days is apparently all it takes to find out.
Sit down here a minute. If that is you, or anything near it, nobody in this piece is going to grade you. There is a reason it went hollow, and it is not the reason you are afraid of.
Nearness is not a reward for feeling
Here is a sentence people quote as encouragement and almost never read as a statement of fact.
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.Psalm 34:18
Read what that verse does not say. It does not say the Lord is near to the brokenhearted who are handling it well. It does not say near to the ones who can still feel Him. It does not attach a single condition to the nearness, and it does not describe the nearness as something the broken person generates by being spiritually alert enough to notice it.
He is near to the brokenhearted. Full stop. The nearness is His act and not your achievement, and it is measured by where He is, not by what you can detect from inside a set of in-ear monitors.
So take this as it stands. You are not further from God this Sunday than you were the Sunday before the phone call. Psalm 34:18 puts Him near the crushed in spirit as a matter of what He does, and the Spirit who inspired that line is in the car with you in the lot with the engine off.
David wrote that in a bad stretch of his own life, which is worth knowing. He was not composing an encouragement for other people from a comfortable chair. Crushed in spirit is a phrase somebody reaches for because it describes the inside of his own chest, and the Holy Spirit put it into Scripture in that state, not after he had recovered from it.
What actually happened on that platform
Now the part about the singing, because there is a verdict on it that nobody handed you but you.
You sang true words you could not feel. That is not hypocrisy. That is what worship looks like when a person is bleeding, and Scripture is full of it. Half the Psalms are somebody singing a truth about God directly into a situation where the evidence in front of him says otherwise, and they were kept in the book precisely because that is what faith sounds like at ground level rather than at altitude.
Feelings are weather. They come in off the sea and they go again and they are not a report on your standing. What is written about your standing does not move with them.
You are His, and you were His the whole way through that set. That is not a conclusion you reach by inspecting your emotions; it is what stands written over anybody in Christ, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps saying it while your own chest says nothing.
And this needs saying plainly, because worship leaders are handed a lie about it early. Leading is not pretending. You were not required to arrive on that platform healed in order to be allowed to open your mouth. Nobody in that room needed your grief resolved. They needed somebody to say true things in the direction of God, and true things are true whether or not the person saying them can feel the floor.
Some of the most honest worship any room has ever had was led by somebody with a watch in their coat pocket.
Why it went hollow
Here is what numbness actually is, and it is not the absence of faith.
It is a body doing its job. A person who has lost somebody eleven days ago is running on something close to shock, and shock deadens everything, including the good. The same nerve that would not let you feel God on Sunday is the nerve that will not let you feel your own kitchen, or a song loved for twenty years, or the taste of anything eaten this week.
Jesus stood at a grave He was about to open and wept. John 11:35. He did not lead with the doctrine, though the doctrine was standing right there and He was about to prove it in about four minutes. He cried first, with them, in front of everybody.
So the God you were singing about is not standing over your hollow Sunday with His arms folded. He is called the Comforter, which is a strange name to take unless He intends to spend a lot of His time with people who cannot feel anything yet.
You are not disqualified by an empty week. That is what is written about anyone who belongs to Him, and the Spirit does not withdraw from a body that has gone numb after a funeral. He is the one thing in your life this month that is not running on your reserves.
Here is where this leaves you, and it is not a lift out of the grief. It is a floor put under it.
Right now, as you read this, you are near to God because He is near to the brokenhearted, and not because you have managed to feel Him this week. The nearness is on His side of the ledger. Psalm 34:18 says so, and the Spirit He put in you is the one holding you there while your own instruments read nothing.
Eleven days is not a deadline. There is no verse anywhere that gives you a date by which the singing is supposed to start meaning something again, and anybody handing you one is inventing it. You have permission to be exactly where you are.
And the set you sang was not a lie. You are allowed to say true things you cannot feel; the Psalms do it constantly, that is written into half of them, and the Spirit inspired every one, and a woman with her father's watch in her coat pocket saying God is close is one of the truest sentences that was spoken in that building on Sunday.
If the weight of this has become dangerous, and staying safe is genuinely in question for you, please call emergency services or a crisis line where you live, and get another person physically near you. Reaching for help is not a failure of faith. It is one honest way of refusing to be alone with a night.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and is not adjusted by what your chest reports this week. Say these quietly if quiet is what you have. Scripture is what puts them in your mouth and the Spirit is the one who carries them, and the timing of everything else belongs to Him and is His to decide.
- Eleven days, you are not a deadline I have missed. Psalm 34:18 puts the Lord near to the brokenhearted with no conditions attached, and I am not required to feel that before it is true.
- Verdict that says the numbness proves I never believed it, you are answered in the name of Jesus. Christ wept at a grave in John 11 before He said one word of doctrine, and a hollow Sunday is not evidence about my heart.
- Father, You are near to the crushed in spirit because Psalm 34:18 says so and not because I earned it, and You have not asked me to hurry. I lead, and I grieve, and You are close to me in both.
