Held In HopeRevelation 21:4

The Empty Seat in the Boat

This message is for a man who lost his younger brother in the winter and has taken the boat out alone twice since, unable to look at the seat, and who has heard the promise of no more crying quoted at him until it went numb

He has been out twice since February and both times he sat in the wrong place on purpose.

His own seat is at the stern by the motor. His brother's was forward, on the port side, because that is where he always sat, from the time he was nine years old and too small to be useful. So now the man sits forward himself, in his brother's spot, facing the wrong way down his own boat, because sitting in his own seat means looking at that one.

That is the whole of it. He has not told anybody. He would not know how to say it without hearing how it sounds.

At the service, and at the house afterward, and twice in the parking lot at work, people said the verse to him. The good one. No more death, no more sorrow, no more crying, no more pain, and God wiping every tear from every eye. He knows it. He has said it to other people. He said it to a coworker two years ago and meant it.

By the fourth time somebody said it to him in February it had gone completely flat, like a word you repeat until it stops being a word.

He is not angry with them. They were being kind, and they had nothing else, and he understands that because he has stood in their shoes holding nothing else. But something in him started to close every time it came, and now the verse itself has a feeling attached to it, and the feeling is not comfort. It is the sound of a conversation ending.

He would like the verse back. That is honestly the request. Not an explanation, not a timeline, not a reason. He would like somebody to hand him that promise slowly enough that it lands on him instead of bouncing off.

Sit down on the transom here a minute. Nobody is going to rush it.

Read it slower than it has ever been said to you

Here is the verse, and I want it read at about a quarter of the speed it usually arrives at.

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.Revelation 21:4

Notice first what it does not do. It does not tell your grief to stop now. There is no instruction in that sentence aimed at you at all. Every verb belongs to God, and every one of them is something He does rather than something you are asked to produce.

He wipes. Not you. And the picture underneath the word is not a public announcement, it is a hand and a face, which is a strange amount of tenderness for a book people mostly quote to frighten each other with, and the Spirit gave John that scene in exactly those words.

Notice second that it assumes the tears. The promise is not that you were wrong to cry. It is that the crying is real enough to require a hand.

So take it as it stands, at this speed. You are inside that sentence. Revelation 21:4 names people with wet faces and God moving toward them, and the Spirit who gave John that scene is the one who has been in the boat with you both times you sat facing the wrong way.

Why it went flat

Now the reason it stopped working, because that is worth understanding rather than repenting of.

A promise said at speed, as a way of closing a conversation, does the opposite of what it was written for. When somebody hands you Revelation 21 in a parking lot in ninety seconds, they are usually managing their own helplessness rather than ministering to yours, and a grieving man can feel the difference across a parking lot with his eyes shut.

That is not their sin and it is not yours. It is just what happens. But it explains the flatness, and it means the flatness is not a report on your faith.

You have not lost the verse. It is not damaged, and neither are you. What is written outlasts the way it was delivered, and the Spirit is patient enough to bring it back around to you at the speed you can take it.

There is also the ordinary matter of time. February is not long. Your body is still doing the thing bodies do, giving you what you can hold and holding the rest back, and grief that has been metered out like that will not receive a large future promise all at once. It receives it in pieces. That is not weakness, it is design.

What the promise does not do, and what it does

Be careful here, because this is where people over-promise and a grieving man gets handed something that breaks in his hands.

Revelation 21:4 does not say your crying ends this year. It does not put a date on anything, and this page will not either, because nobody has been given one and anybody who tells you otherwise is selling something. It says the former things pass away and that God Himself does the wiping, and it leaves the when entirely with Him.

What that gives you is not a schedule. It is a direction. The grief you are in has an end that is not your own exhaustion and not the passage of enough time. It has an end because God ends it, personally, with His hand.

You are heading somewhere and the somewhere has your brother in it. That is written, it is not my opinion, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps it standing while a man sits facing the wrong way down his own boat.

And you are allowed to want him back rather than wanting a doctrine. Wanting the person is not a failure to appreciate the promise. It is the reason the promise exists.

The breakthrough

Here is where this leaves you, and it is not a lift out of it. It is a floor under it.

Right now, as you read this, you are a man grieving his brother and a man with something ahead of him that God has undertaken to do Himself, and both are true at once. Revelation 21:4 puts the wiping in His hands, and the Spirit is the one who makes it more than a line said too fast in a parking lot.

Nothing is being asked of you today. Not a feeling, not a schedule, not a better reaction the next time somebody says it to you. Take the verse back at whatever speed it will come.

And you were not wrong to sit forward. Nothing written anywhere requires a man to look at an empty seat before he is ready, and the Holy Spirit went out in that boat with you both times without once telling you to move.

If the weight of this becomes dangerous, and staying safe is genuinely in question for you, please call emergency services or a crisis line where you live, and get another person physically near you. Reaching for help is not a failure of faith. It is one honest way of refusing to be alone with a night.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and is not affected by how flat a verse has gone this month. Say these out loud on the water if that is the only place you can. Scripture is what puts them in your mouth and the Spirit is the one who carries them, and the timing of everything else belongs to Him and is His to decide.

  1. Seat I cannot look at, you are not a place God has forgotten. Revelation 21:4 has Him wiping every tear from every eye with His own hand, and my brother is not outside that sentence.
  2. Flatness that came over the promise in a parking lot, you are answered in the name of Jesus. What is written outlasts the way it was delivered, and the Spirit is bringing it back to me at the speed I can take it.
  3. Lord, You said in Revelation 21:4 that the former things pass away and that You do the wiping Yourself. I want my brother and not a doctrine, and You are not offended by that, and I am held while I wait.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
