Nobody Takes Them Out of His Hand

This message is for a woman who has spent seven months searching for reassurance about her husband online at night, reading strangers arguing about the destiny of the dead, and getting less settled every week

It starts at about ten and the worst of it is between eleven and one.

She does the dishes, she puts the radio off, and then she gets the tablet and she looks things up. Seven months of it now. She could not tell you when it became a routine and she is fairly clear that it now is one.

What she looks up varies and the shape never does. Some question about the dead, phrased slightly differently each night to see whether a different phrasing produces a different result. And what comes back is strangers. Confident strangers, in enormous numbers, disagreeing with each other in every direction, in comment threads and articles and videos with titles designed to be clicked at midnight by somebody exactly like her.

Some of them are cruel. Some of them are kind and wrong. A few of them are careful, and she has learned to recognize those, and even the careful ones do not have what she is after because nobody has it.

Her husband died in February. He was a quiet believer of the sort that leaves very little visible evidence, which was fine for thirty four years and has become the entire problem.

And here is what she noticed in July and has not been able to unnotice. She is less settled now than she was in March. Seven months of reading, and it has gone backward.

Sit down. The tablet can stay where it is.

The sentence with a hand in it

Here is what He actually said, and it is worth noticing what kind of sentence it is.

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.John 10:27

That is not an argument. It is not a position in a debate that other positions are contending with. It is a first person statement by the One doing the holding, about what He does and what nobody else can undo.

And the image is a hand, which is a deliberately physical thing to say. Not a register, not a status, not a category. A grip.

You are reading about a hand rather than about a filing system, and John 10:27 has Christ Himself saying that nobody snatches anybody out of it, and the Spirit put that in the record in the first person because the question was always going to be asked at midnight by people like you.

Notice the order in that sentence too. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them. The knowing is His. The recognition runs from Him outward, and it does not depend on what was visible to anybody else during thirty four years of marriage.

You are inside a sentence Christ spoke in the first person about His own sheep, and John 10:27 does not attach a condition about how loudly anybody carried it, and the Spirit put those words in the record precisely because the question was going to be asked in kitchens like yours.

There is one more thing about the way that verse is built. He says they will never perish before He says nobody snatches them, which is the same assurance stated twice from two directions: nothing goes wrong from the inside, and nothing takes them from the outside. A sentence constructed that carefully was not constructed casually.

Why the search makes it worse

Now the routine, because it needs to be understood rather than merely stopped.

What happens every night is a search for consensus, and consensus is not available on this subject and never has been. So the search does what searches do: it returns more, which produces more to weigh, which produces a longer night.

There is a mechanism to it that is worth knowing. Every certainty you read is written by somebody who does not know your husband, and your mind correctly discounts it, and the discounting leaves you with the same hole plus a new voice in it. That is why seven months of reading has moved you backward. You have been adding voices to a room that needed one.

You are not going to be settled by volume. Nothing written anywhere suggests that God intended this question to be answered by weight of opinion, and the Spirit is called the Comforter rather than the consensus.

There is also something specific about the hour. Everything is worse at midnight. A person's capacity to hold an unresolved thing is lowest in the small hours, and that is when the hardest material in the house has been getting handed over. If the tablet came out at ten in the morning with the sun on the table and somebody else in the house, half of what it does to you would not happen, and that tells you the reading was never really the problem.

The quiet believer problem

Here is the part underneath all of it, and it deserves naming plainly.

The fear underneath everything is that a quiet faith is an unverifiable faith. Thirty four years of a man who did not talk about it, who came to church and said little, who prayed at meals in about four words, and now there is nothing to point at.

But consider what you are actually asking for. You want evidence that would satisfy you, and the only kind of evidence that could exist is external and performed, and Scripture is repeatedly and pointedly uninterested in that. There is a verse that goes at this directly and it says the Lord knows those who are His. The knowing is His, and it is described as a seal rather than as a conclusion anybody else reaches.

Your husband was not made harder to know by being quiet. What is written puts the recognition in Christ's hands rather than in a record of visible activity, and the Spirit is not dependent on a man having been demonstrative for thirty four years.

And think for a moment about what a quiet faith actually looked like in that house. A man who came, week after week, for decades, without any of the social reward that comes to people who talk about it. Nobody was watching him do it. There was nothing in it for his reputation. Whatever that was, it was not performance, and if you were going to build a case, that is the sort of material that would go in it rather than the sort you have been searching for online.

The breakthrough

Here is where this leaves you, and it is not a verdict about your husband. It is a hand to stand on instead of a search bar.

Right now, as you read this, you are a woman holding a question nobody online can answer and a woman reading a sentence about a grip that nobody can break, and both are true at once. John 10:27 has Christ saying no one will snatch them out of My hand, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a place to rest rather than one more opinion in the pile.

Nothing is being asked of you tonight. Not certainty, not a decision about the tablet, not a resolution before you sleep.

You are not required to settle this by research. Nothing written anywhere put that job in a widow's hands at midnight, and the Holy Spirit has been in the room for all seven months of it without once needing you to reach a conclusion.

If the weight of this becomes dangerous, and staying safe is genuinely in question for you, please call emergency services or a crisis line where you live, and get another person physically near you. Reaching for help is not a failure of faith. It is one honest way of refusing to be alone with a night.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and does not depend on what you read at midnight. Say these out loud in your own kitchen. Scripture is what puts them in your mouth and the Spirit is the one who carries them, and the timing of everything else belongs to Him and is His to decide.

  1. Search bar at midnight, you are not the place this gets settled. John 10:27 has Christ saying that nobody snatches them out of His hand, and that is a grip rather than an opinion.
  2. Fear that a quiet faith is an unverifiable faith, you are answered in the name of Jesus. What is written puts the knowing in Christ rather than in a record of visible activity, and the Spirit was never dependent on a man being demonstrative.
  3. Lord, You said in John 10:27 that You know Your own and that no one takes them out of Your hand. I put the tablet down tonight, and I stop talking.
