His To KeepJohn 6:37

The Empty House at Nine Years Old

This message is for a woman who came home at nine years old to an empty house, decided in about four seconds that everybody had gone without her, and has never fully stopped bracing for that since

The back door was unlocked, which was normal, and the radio was on in the kitchen, which was also normal.

What was not normal was that nobody answered. She said mom, once, in the hall, in the voice a child uses when they expect an answer, and then again from the bottom of the stairs, and then she stopped saying it because the not-answering had become a thing she did not want to add to.

Her brother's shoes were by the door. The kettle was warm.

And in about four seconds, standing on a hall carpet at nine years old, she arrived at a conclusion, whole and complete, the way children do: it has happened, and they have gone, and I am the one who is still here.

Her mother was at the neighbor's about a lamp. She was gone eleven minutes.

That is the whole event. Eleven minutes, thirty one years ago, and her mother came back through the door with a lamp shade and found her daughter sitting on the third stair not crying, and asked her what was wrong, and the girl said nothing.

She is forty now and she has never told anybody that story, because told out loud it is nothing. A child was briefly alone in a house. That is not a trauma, that is a Tuesday.

Except that she has never entirely stopped bracing. It arrives in odd shapes. A phone that rings out. A parking lot where the car is not where she left it. Her husband not answering a message for four hours. And underneath every one of those, in about a quarter of a second, the hall carpet.

Sit down. There is something to say to a nine year old that nobody has said to her yet.

The sentence Christ made unconditional

Here is the promise, and the thing to notice about it is how it is constructed.

All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.John 6:37

Two halves and a hinge. The first half is about who is given. The second half is about what He does with them, and it is put in the strongest negative construction available: I will never cast out.

He does not say I will do my best to keep hold of them. He does not attach a condition about how alert they are, or how they perform in a hallway at nine years old.

You are inside a sentence with no exit clause, and John 6:37 has Christ Himself saying He will never cast out anybody who comes, and the Spirit inspired the strongest form of the negative because the fear He was answering was exactly this one.

And notice who does the keeping. Everything active in that verse belongs to the Father and the Son. Nothing in it is assigned to the person being kept, which is why it holds for a woman whose whole nervous system is arranged around being left.

What actually happened on the carpet

Now the four seconds, because they are still running and they deserve to be looked at properly rather than dismissed.

A nine year old brain is not equipped to hold an ambiguous absence. It resolves. Fast. And it resolves with whatever material it has, and the material she had was probably a film, or a conversation half overheard, or something said in a Sunday school room by somebody meaning well.

What she built in four seconds was a complete explanation, and it was wrong, and nobody ever came back and told her it was wrong. Her mother came back with a lamp shade. Nobody addressed the conclusion because nobody knew it had been reached.

So it has stood, unexamined, for thirty one years, and it is running underneath a phone that rings out and a car that is not where it was left.

The hard thing about a conclusion reached at nine is that it does not present itself as a belief. It presents itself as the way things are. Nobody argues with the floor. So it has never been examined, never been contradicted, and never had to defend itself against anything, and it has been quietly setting the temperature of a woman in her forties for three decades.

You were not abandoned in that hallway and you are not going to be. Nothing written anywhere makes a person's place dependent on their being in the right room at the right moment, and the Spirit did not attach an alertness clause to anything Christ said in John 6.

Where the fear is actually pointed

Here is the part that matters most, and it is worth going slowly.

The bracing is not really about your husband, or the phone, or the car. Those are the shapes it takes. What is underneath it is a conviction, formed young, that being left is the sort of thing that happens to you specifically, and that the way to survive it is to be watching.

Which means the fear has been quietly asking you to be your own safeguard for thirty one years. That is exhausting, and it is also unnecessary, and the unnecessary part is the part nobody has told you.

Your place was never held open by your attention. Christ says He will never cast out and the keeping is His work in John 6:37, and the Spirit bears witness to that rather than leaving you to verify it by staying alert.

And you can stop looking for the moment you might have missed. There is no such moment in Scripture. There is no account anywhere of somebody who belonged to Him being lost because they were not paying attention on a particular afternoon.

You are held by somebody who is not distracted. That is written into John 6:37 as His own undertaking, and the Spirit did not make the promise contingent on the vigilance of the person it was made to.

The breakthrough

Here is where this leaves you, and it is not a promise that the bracing stops tomorrow. It is a floor under the hallway.

Right now, as you read this, you are a woman who was never actually left and a woman who has spent thirty one years bracing for it, and both are true at once. John 6:37 says whoever comes to Him will never be cast out, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a fact rather than a sentence you would have to keep verifying.

Nothing is being asked of you today. Not an end to the reflex, not a conversation with your mother about a lamp shade, not a better response the next time a phone rings out.

Your place is not something you could lose by not paying attention. Nothing written anywhere makes vigilance the thing that holds it, and the Holy Spirit has been with the nine year old on that carpet for thirty one years without once asking her to be watching.

If the weight of this becomes dangerous, and staying safe is genuinely in question for you, please call emergency services or a crisis line where you live, and get another person physically near you. Reaching for help is not a failure of faith. It is one honest way of refusing to be alone with a night.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and is not maintained by how closely you are watching. Say these out loud where you are standing. Scripture is what puts them in your mouth and the Spirit is the one who carries them, and the timing of everything else belongs to Him and is His to decide.

  1. Four seconds in that hallway, you are not the truth about where I stand. John 6:37 has Christ saying that whoever comes to Him is never cast out, and a nine year old conclusion is not a verdict.
  2. Bracing that has run underneath thirty one years, you are answered in the name of Jesus. What is written puts every active verb in that promise on His side, and the Spirit bears witness to it rather than leaving me to verify it.
  3. Lord, You said in John 6:37 that You will never cast out the one who comes to You. My place was settled by You, and it is not something I could miss by not paying attention.
