The Headline She Reads Twice

She could not tell you the day it started, only the year, and the year is nine years ago.

The first reading is the ordinary one. A thing has happened somewhere, and it is bad or it is not, and she takes it in the way anybody does.

Then there is the second one. She goes back over it looking for what it means. Where it sits. What it lines up with. Whether it is one of the ones that matters. She has never described this to anybody and she suspects, correctly, that she would not be able to make it sound as reasonable out loud as it feels in her head.

Nine years, several times a day.

She has a good life. She has friends who would be astonished. She runs a section at work and she is calm at work and she can hold a difficult conversation better than most people.

What she has noticed is arithmetic. In nine years she has never once ended a day more settled than she began it. Not once. She has had good days and she has had days that were fine, and there has never been a day where the second readings added up to any kind of resolution, because the second readings do not resolve, they accumulate.

She would put it like this, if she ever said it: I have been doing something every day for nine years and it has never once worked.

Sit down. There is a verse for this and it is in the present tense, which is the whole point of it.

A very present help

Here it is, and the important word is not the one people usually stress.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.Psalm 46:1

Present. Not coming, not expected, not scheduled. Present, in the trouble, now.

Everything the second reading does is aimed at the future. It asks what is coming, where this leads, whether this is one of the ones that matters. And this verse does not answer that question at all. It says something entirely different, which is that God is here, in the middle of what is actually happening, as a refuge.

You are not being handed a forecast. Psalm 46:1 gives you a present help rather than a projection, and the Spirit inspired the word present precisely for people whose whole trouble lives in a future they are trying to read.

Look at what the psalm does next as well. It talks about the earth giving way and mountains going into the sea, and it says therefore we will not fear. It does not say the mountains will stay put. It offers presence rather than a settled account of circumstances, and it is completely uninterested in prediction.

What the second reading is actually for

Now the practice itself, and it deserves an honest account rather than a scolding.

The second reading is not stupidity and it is not a lack of faith. It is an attempt to be safe. If you can see the shape of what is coming, you can prepare for it, and preparation is the only lever a person has, and everybody reaches for the only lever they have.

The trouble is that the lever is not connected to anything. There is no arrangement of headlines that produces safety, because safety was never going to be a function of foresight, and the nine years of arithmetic you have run is the evidence. The practice has been tested exhaustively, by you, and it has never once returned a settled day.

You are not failing at the second reading. Nothing written anywhere makes reading events the way to be safe, and the Spirit is not the source of a practice that has never once produced peace in nine years.

And this is not an argument for ignoring the news. A person can read a headline once, be appropriately concerned, and act if there is something to do. The first reading is fine. It is the second one that has no exit.

Where the safety actually is

Here is the exchange, and it is smaller than nine years of habit will make it feel.

The second reading is asking: is this one of the ones that matters. Replace that question, when you catch yourself in it, with a statement: God is a very present help in trouble. Say it out loud if you can, because the second reading is silent and internal and a spoken sentence interrupts it in a way a thought does not.

That is not a substitute answer to the question. It is a refusal of the question, which is different and is the only thing that works, because the question does not have an answer and cannot be satisfied.

And it will feel, the first several dozen times, like you are neglecting something. That feeling is the habit protesting. A practice that has been running several times a day for nine years does not surrender territory quietly, and the protest is not a signal that something important is going unattended. It is only the sound of a groove being crossed.

You have a refuge rather than a forecast. Psalm 46:1 says God is our refuge and strength, and the Spirit is the one who makes that present tense rather than aspirational.

And expect it to take a while. Nine years of several times a day is a great many repetitions and it will not be undone by a good afternoon.

And there is one more thing worth knowing about the shape of it. The second reading always arrives with a feeling of responsibility attached, as though not doing it would be careless. That feeling is the strongest part of the whole mechanism and it is the part with the least behind it. Nothing written anywhere makes a private search for meaning in the news anybody duty, and the Spirit has never once required a woman at a kitchen table to work out where an event sits in a sequence.
