There were about four hundred of them and she knew the regulars by their handles the way you know neighbors.
Eleven years. She joined at twenty six, in a bad stretch, and it was the first place she had ever been where people took the whole thing seriously and would talk about it at two in the morning. That is not nothing and she is not going to pretend it was.
The countdown was not a date, which is what she would say if anybody accused her of having been in a doomsday group. It was more sophisticated than that. It was a way of reading, a set of correspondences, and a running commentary in which everything that happened anywhere was placed into a sequence, and the sequence was always tightening.
She left eighteen months ago. Not over a failed prediction. Over the way a woman in there was treated when she asked a question.
The leaving was clean and the aftermath is not.
Here is what she cannot manage. She opens her Bible and she cannot read a page of it without hearing them. Not vaguely. Specific voices, specific handles, specific readings attached to specific verses, arriving automatically, in the way a song you hate arrives when somebody says a word from it.
Eleven years of annotation, in a book she has to read, and she cannot get to the text underneath it.
Sit down. There is a verse about a mind that is kept, and it does not ask you to stop hearing anything.
A mind stayed on a person
Here it is, and notice what the mind in it is fixed on.
You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.Isaiah 26:3
Stayed on you. Not stayed on a system, not stayed on a correct reading, not stayed on a sequence of events correctly ordered. On a person, and the reason given is trust rather than comprehension.
That distinction is the whole of your problem and the whole of the way out. What you learned in that group was to fix your mind on a pattern. The pattern was intricate and it rewarded attention and it produced a great deal of engagement, and it did not produce peace, because a pattern cannot keep anybody.
You are able to have a mind stayed on Christ rather than on a sequence, and Isaiah 26:3 attaches the keeping to a person, and the Spirit inspired the word trusts rather than the word understands.
And that verse is worth reading against what the group actually sold. A pattern promises that if you get the arrangement right you will finally be at rest, and it never delivers, because there is always another correspondence to place and the sequence can always be refined. Isaiah 26:3 does not offer a better arrangement. It moves the whole thing off arrangement altogether and puts it on a person who does not require you to have finished working anything out.
Why the voices come
Now the annotation, because it is worth knowing that this is mechanical rather than spiritual.
Eleven years of reading a text alongside a running commentary builds an association between the two. That is how memory works and it is entirely ordinary. Every verse that had a reading attached to it in that group now retrieves the reading along with the verse, automatically, without your permission.
That is not the group still having power over you and it is not a spiritual attack. It is a filing system doing what a filing system does.
You are not contaminated. Nothing written anywhere makes an association in your memory a corruption of the text, and the Spirit is not blocked by a handle you remember.
And associations of that kind fade with new use rather than with effort. You cannot delete them. You can lay new material over them, which happens by reading, which is exactly the thing that is currently hard, which is why this needs a practical answer rather than an encouraging one.
You are not going to have to purge anything. Nothing written anywhere asks a person to empty their own memory first, and the Spirit works by overlaying rather than by deletion.
How to read it again
Here is the practical part, and it has three small pieces.
Read out loud. The voices in your head cannot compete with your own voice in a room. This is not a metaphor, it is a mechanical fact about attention, and it works immediately.
Read the parts they never touched. That group had a canon within the canon, and there will be whole books they had no use for. Start there. Ruth. Philippians. The parts of the Psalms that are not about anything cosmic. Give yourself six months in territory that carries no annotation at all.
And when a voice does arrive, do not argue with it. Arguing rehearses it. Say one sentence out loud about who holds the day, and go back to the line you were on.
And give it longer than feels reasonable. Eleven years laid down a great deal of material and eighteen months is not long against it. What you are looking for is not a day when the voices are gone. What you are looking for is a slow shift in the ratio, where more of a page belongs to you than to them, and Isaiah 26:3 does not make that shift a condition of the peace it describes, and the Spirit is working underneath it the whole time.
You have a right to that book without a commentary running over it. What is written was given to you and not to a forum, and the Spirit who inspired it is a better guide through it than four hundred people at two in the morning ever were.
Here is where this leaves you, and it is not a promise that the voices stop this year. It is a mind stayed on somebody who is not a sequence.
Right now, as you read this, you are a woman carrying eleven years of annotation and a woman whose peace is attached to a person rather than to a correct reading, and both are true at once. Isaiah 26:3 says He keeps in perfect peace the one whose mind is stayed on Him, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a keeping rather than a technique.
Nothing is being asked of you this year. Not a return to any group, not a settled opinion about anybody in it, not the ability to open any particular chapter yet.
You are not stuck with their book. Nothing written anywhere gave four hundred people the rights to it, and the Holy Spirit has been the one who inspired it and is still the one who opens it.
If the weight of this becomes dangerous, and staying safe is genuinely in question for you, please call emergency services or a crisis line where you live, and get another person physically near you. Reaching for help is not a failure of faith. It is one honest way of refusing to be alone with a night.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and is not affected by eleven years of somebody else's readings. Say these out loud where you read. Scripture is what puts them in your mouth and the Spirit is the one who carries them, and the timing of everything else belongs to Him and is His to decide.
- Voices I hear when I open it, you are not what the book says. Isaiah 26:3 attaches perfect peace to a mind stayed on Him rather than to a correct sequence, and a pattern was never going to keep anybody.
- Eleven years of annotation, you are answered in the name of Jesus. What is written was given to me rather than to a forum, and the Spirit who inspired it is a better guide through it than four hundred people at two in the morning.
- Lord, You keep in perfect peace the one whose mind is stayed on You, as Isaiah 26:3 says, because he trusts in You. The day belongs to You, and I am not owed a date and I am not living by one.
