The consultant was decent about it. She would like that on the record, because a lot of them are not.
He did not say a number and she did not ask for one, and they understood each other. He said the word months at one point in a sentence that was about something else, and she noticed it and let it go past, and afterward she sat in the parking lot for a while with the radio off.
She is eighty two. She is not frightened and she does not want anybody to make a fuss about her not being frightened, because she suspects it would be a different conversation at fifty.
What she is thinking about is her daughter, who is fifty six and who is going to be standing in a kitchen at some point with a mug and a phone and nobody to ring.
She wants to leave her something. Not the house, that is all arranged. A sentence. Something the girl can put her weight on later, in the bad stretch, when everybody has gone home and the sympathy cards have been taken down.
And here is her difficulty, and it is the reason she has not managed to say anything yet. She has been to a great many funerals in eighty two years and she has heard a great many sentences, and most of them were false. She will not do it. She will not tell her daughter that she will be watching over her, because she does not know that and nobody has said it. She will not say she will be an angel. She will not say she will be at her shoulder at the wedding of a grandchild, however much both of them would like it to be true.
She would rather leave one small true thing than a beautiful thing that gives way in ten years.
Sit down at the table with her. This is exactly the right instinct and it can be honored.
What God actually undertook
Start with what is actually promised, because it is more solid than the sentences you have rejected and it will hold longer. The Spirit did not leave a dying woman to improvise here.
Knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence.2 Corinthians 4:14
Read the last part slowly, because that is the load-bearing clause. Bring us with you. It is not only that the dead are raised. It is that they are brought, together with the living, into His presence, and Paul writes it to a church as a plain expectation rather than as an aspiration.
Notice what is not there. Nothing about watching from anywhere. Nothing about presence at family occasions. Nothing about a role for the dead in the affairs of the living, which is the thing you have been refusing to say and were right to refuse.
So take what He did undertake. You are promised a bringing together, and 2 Corinthians 4:14 puts it in God's hands rather than yours, and the Spirit who inspired it did not add the decorations that get added at funerals.
That is the sentence you are looking for. It is smaller than the ones you rejected and it is made of something else entirely.
Why the small true thing outlasts the large false one
Now why your instinct is right, because you should know that it is and not merely feel it.
A comforting sentence that is not true does not hold under load. It works for a couple of weeks, which is when everybody is around and nobody is testing anything. Then the daughter has a bad night in about the eighth month and she reaches for it, and it gives, and what she loses is not just the sentence. She loses her confidence in everything that was said to her at the same time, including the parts that were true.
That is why what is written is worth more than what is warm. What is written was not composed to get anybody through a couple of weeks.
You are handing her something that carries weight. Nothing written anywhere requires a dying woman to improve on Scripture, and the Spirit does not need help from a decorative addition.
And there is a second gift in refusing the false thing, and your daughter will feel it later even if she cannot name it. You will have taught her that her mother did not say things she could not stand behind. That is worth a very great deal in a bad year, because it means everything else you ever told her holds too.
Say it plainly and say it more than once
Here is the practical part, and it is smaller than you expect.
Do not write a letter that has to do everything. Letters like that get heavy and they get written and rewritten and often they do not get finished. Say the sentence out loud instead, to her face, in an ordinary hour, and then say it again another time.
Something like this, in your own words. I am going to die. God has said that He raises His people and brings them together into His presence. I do not know when and I do not know what it will be like. I know that we are not finished.
That is four sentences and none of them overclaims.
You are permitted to say it more than once. Nothing written anywhere makes a farewell a single ceremony, and the Spirit has not put a limit on how often a mother may hand her daughter the same true thing.
And let her say something back. That is half of what this is for. She has things she needs to say to you and she is not going to start, because she is fifty six and she is being brave for you, and the only thing that will give her permission is you going first.
Here is where this leaves you, and it is not an instruction to be brave. It is something solid to put in her hands.
Right now, as you read this, you are a woman with a limited stretch of time and a woman holding a promise that does not depend on her, and both are true at once. 2 Corinthians 4:14 says He raises and He brings us together into His presence, and the Spirit is the one who makes that hold in the eighth month when everybody has gone home.
Nothing is being asked of you that you cannot do. Not eloquence, not a letter, not a scene.
You are not leaving her with less because you refused to say the pretty thing. Nothing written anywhere makes a comforting invention kinder than a true sentence, and the Holy Spirit will not be embarrassed by a woman who would only say what God said.
If the weight of this becomes dangerous, and staying safe is genuinely in question for you, please call emergency services or a crisis line where you live, and get another person physically near you. Reaching for help is not a failure of faith. It is one honest way of refusing to be alone with a night.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and does not depend on how much time the consultant did not name. Say these out loud at your own table. Scripture is what puts them in your mouth and the Spirit is the one who carries them, and the timing of everything else belongs to Him and is His to decide.
- Sentence I refuse to overclaim, you are not a poorer thing than a comforting lie. 2 Corinthians 4:14 says He raises us and brings us together into His presence, and that is more than I could have invented.
- Fear that my daughter will be left with nothing to hold, you are answered in the name of Jesus. What is written was not composed to get anybody through a couple of weeks, and the Spirit is the one who keeps it standing in her eighth month.
- Lord, You said in 2 Corinthians 4:14 that You will raise us and bring us with her into Your presence. We are not finished, and I can say that to her without adding one word to it.
2 Corinthians 4:14
